This portrait is based on a photograph that was taken of me and my grandfather celebrating my engagement. He had just been diagnosed with bladder cancer and knew he would not make it to the wedding. We took as many photos as we could, in our wedding colors, and out of all the meaningfully staged and timing pictures, this candid photo meant the most. My grandfather is who I credit all my artistic talent. He was an incredibly talented artist. Every time I went to his house, I would look at all his paintings, drawings, and caricatures. I realized I had sent him small pieces of art as gifts, but I never made him something that truly demonstrated what he gave to me, so I created this painting of us. While painting, I felt like I was spending time with my grandfather. I would hear his laugh, Frank Sinatra in the background and smell his perfectly manicured home, like I was there. That time spent with him was invaluable. It was a miracle that I was able to give him this painting for Christmas. A Christmas that we didn’t think we would get. Our last Christmas. Now, I’m married and it hangs in my living room, so I can spend time with him any time I want.
